The House of Representatives has clarified reports of discrepancies in members’ salaries, following claims that they received full July salaries despite pledging to donate 50% for six months.
A lawmaker representing Nnewi South Federal Constituency, Uzokwe Ifeanyi, had during a television interview confirmed that the members of the House received their full salaries for July with his own credit amounting to N936,979.
But a statement by the spokesman of the chambers, Akin Rotimi, clarified that the actual monthly salary of lawmakers is N600,000, noting that Ifeanyi was a recent lawmaker validated by a Court Judgement and undergoing onboarding.
He also blamed the delay in the implementation of the 50% salary reduction on administrative procedures and coordination with financial institutions.
He added that the leadership of the House had given instructions for subsequent deductions.
