The Rivers State Police Command has warned that ongoing protests are turning violent, with demonstrators engaging in unlawful acts such as extortion, property destruction, and harassment of business owners.
This is as Protesters attempted to beseech the private residence of the FCT Minister and former governor of the state, Chief Nyesom Wike but were prevented by Policemen.
The protesters marched along the popular Ada George road where Wike’s house is located and on getting to the front of the courtyard stopped and chanted some songs in solidarity.
But policemen, who cordoned off the area with an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) prevented them from going close to the walls of the house.
Earlier, River State Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko expressed concern over protesters calling for traders and motorists to stay home or join the demonstrations.
The police noted a lack of clear leadership among protesters, leading to a breakdown of order. While affirming citizens’ right to protest, the command stated it would act decisively to arrest and prosecute individuals engaging in criminal activities under the guise of protests.
Authorities advised protesters to remain in designated areas like Pleasure Park and Abali Park, refraining from disrupting free movement or engaging in unlawful activities.
