Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s recent address to the nation, stating it failed to tackle key issues fueling nationwide protests.
Obi acknowledged Tinubu’s effort to address the public, albeit late, but noted the speech’s lack of empathy towards protesters injured or detained.
He argued that the address seemed disconnected from the people’s harsh realities and didn’t address the root causes of the demonstrations.
The opposition leader advised Tinubu to surround himself with advisers who would present unvarnished truths about the country’s situation. While appreciating the President’s condemnation of ethnic bigotry, Obi called for more decisive action against those inciting intolerance.
Obi emphasized that Tinubu should focus on pressing issues like reducing governance costs, tackling corruption, alleviating poverty, and improving critical sectors such as health and education.
He suggested regular presidential briefings to communicate measures being taken to revive the nation and rebuild trust in the government.
