The Osun House of Assembly on Monday passed two bills for second reading, aiming to amend local government creation and electoral commission laws to align with the Supreme Court judgment on local government financial autonomy.
The bills, titled “Osun State Local Government Areas Creation and Administration Amendment (No. 7) Bill, 2024” and “Osun Independent Electoral Commission Amendment (No.1) Bill, 2024,” seek to recognize only the 774 local governments in the constitution and grant them financial autonomy.
Deputy Majority Leader Adekunle Oladimeji emphasized that the amendments are necessary to avoid conflicts with the Supreme Court judgment and strengthen the local government system.
He also explained that the bills aim to ensure that the Osun Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) conducts elections for constitutionally recognized local councils only.
The Assembly urged for accelerated passage of the bills, with Speaker Adewale Egbedun supporting the resolution.
