The House of Representatives has approved the Police Act Amendment Bill, allowing the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to serve their full term as stipulated in their appointment letter.
This decision follows President Bola Tinubu’s request to amend the Principal Act.
The bill aims to guarantee the IGP’s tenure, enhance police operations, promote accountability, modernize policing methods, and improve police-community relations.
Both the House and Senate passed it unanimously on Tuesday.
Earlier in July, police authorities denied allegations that the incumbent IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, influenced the National Assembly to pass a bill raising officers’ retirement age.
Egbetokun, appointed in June 2023 for a four-year term, was expected to retire in September 2024 at 60.
The amended Act now allows the IGP to remain in office until the end of their appointed term, overriding the previous retirement age limit.
