South Africa has informed climate donors that it will miss its 2030 emissions reduction goals but remains committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
This was disclosed by the Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.
Under the Paris Climate Accords, South Africa pledged to reduce emissions to between 350 and 420 million tonnes by 2030, down from 442 million tonnes in 2020.
South Africa, currently the world’s most carbon-intensive major economy and 15th largest greenhouse gas emitter, has prioritized energy security due to ongoing power cuts, leading to increased reliance on coal-fired power stations.
Ramokgopa plans to meet with lenders and private power providers to address project delays and accelerate investment in green energy.
