Nigeria has experienced its fourth power grid collapse of 2024, with electricity generation plummeting to just 0.80 megawatts.
The Independent System Operator’s website reported a steady decline in power plants’ contributions, starting around 2pm and reaching the critical low by 4pm on Saturday.
This was confirmed in a noticed by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, disclosed this in a notice on Saturday.
In 2024 alone, Nigeria has recorded at least three system collapses. System collapse has occurred about 227 times in the last 14 years, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
This recurring issue has drawn criticism from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who expressed disappointment with Nigeria’s poor electricity generation during the inauguration of a Presidential Economic Coordination Council.
Tinubu called it “shameful” that Nigeria, despite its size, produces only 4.5GW of electricity.
The President emphasized the need for creative solutions to address economic challenges, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships.
He stressed the urgency of improving energy security, calling for collective efforts to enhance the oil and gas industry and expand electricity generation and distribution nationwide.
