Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged federal and state governments to align on waterways management, reiterating a need for collaboration with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).
Governor Sanwo-Olu spoke during the working visit and courtesy visit of the Senate Committee on Marine Transportation and Blue Economy led by its Chairman, Senator Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni, at Lagos House, Ikeja.
Sanwo-Olu who pledged to improve the working relationship with NIWA, stressed the importance of coordinating with NIWA, particularly on sand filling approvals which have environmental consequences.
“We see ourselves as partners with NIWA on waterways. We are committed, and we believe that they are equally committed. The only area in which we need to strengthen our relationship is the sand filling and approval on sand filling. Let us be on the same page. We can continue to improve and enhance the working relationship between us and NIWA,” the Governor said.
In his remarks, Eshinlokun-Sanni aligned with the Governor on the proposal for collaboration, adding that it would also boost social and economic activities on waterways.
