The Southern Governors’ Forum, representing 17 governors from South-West, South-East, and South-South, has unveiled ambitious plans to generate 90,000 MW of electricity for the region’s 90 million residents.
The forum aims to achieve this by leveraging recent constitutional amendments allowing states to regulate and generate electricity.
In a 16-point communique, the governors called for strengthened fiscal federalism and devolution of powers. They expressed concern over mineral licensing practices and emphasized the need for state involvement to address environmental and economic issues.
The forum also plans to transition to cleaner energy sources, improve transportation infrastructure, and create a Southern States Development Agenda to foster trade and investment.
They support the creation of state police and pledged to promote intra-region trade and partnerships.
The governors commended President Tinubu’s food palliative support and economic reforms, pledging their support for his Renewed Hope Agenda to reposition the country.
