India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to show his influence in the country’s politics by retaining all key cabinet ministers in their portfolios in the new government.
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who spearheaded the country’s foreign policy for the last five years, was handed back his position as the External Affairs Minister. Amit Shah will continue as India’s Home Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman will remain as the Finance Minister and Rajnath Singh will continue to be Defense Minister.
Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was unable to win a majority all by itself and had to rely on coalition allies for a majority in parliament.
Subsequently, Modi was expected to give up key portfolios to his allies which has not happened and analysts suggest there could be some anger over the cabinet choices but no immediate fall-out.
