The Senate Wednesday approved a bill to create the National Animal Husbandry and Ranches Commission, aimed at regulating cattle rearing and ranching nationwide.
Sponsor of the bill, Titus Zam of Benue North West, argued the Commission would manage, regulate, and preserve ranches across Nigeria.
Other Senators also supported the bill, noting that commission would help manage farmer-herder conflicts.
However, the proposal faced strong opposition as Senators Danjuma Goje and Adamu Aliero contended that since cattle rearing is more prevalent in the North, the bill unfairly targets one region.
It was however passed after a voice vote with President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio referring it to the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Judiciary and Legal Matters to be reverted in four weeks.
