The Nigerian Army has appealed to the public to exercise caution and restraint in dealing with military personnel and other security operatives, especially when they are in uniform, as such acts amount to outright disregard for existing laws.
In a statement by Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the incident at Bannex Plaza in Wuse, Abuja, on Saturday 18 May 2024, was a case of unwarranted attacks on officials of the army by yet to be identified hoodlums.
According to him, the concerned officers were not a threat to the public as at the time of the incident, noting that the army has responded to the situation by consulting the management of the plaza, to investigate and resolve the matter, which he said is still ongoing.
He said the Nigerian Army will equally ensure that it diligently investigates the circumstances surrounding the presence of the personnel at the plaza and the attack that ensued, while condeming the recent trend of attacks on army personnel, which he described as entirely unwarranted and unjustifiable.
Nwachukwu urged the public to employ established channels through which grievances or misconduct by personnel could be reported to the appropriate authorities.
