The Nigerian Army has labeled a viral audiovisual footage showing soldiers protesting against overcrowded cells and poor feeding conditions at the 8 Division Garrison detention facility in Sokoto barracks as embarrassing.
In a press release issued by Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Army Headquarters acknowledged the incident as unfortunate.
He said the Chief of Army Staff, Maj Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja has initiated an investigation to determine the extent of similar conditions in other detention facilities.
While expressing regret over the incident, the Army emphasized that mutiny and conduct prejudicial to service order are serious offenses and hinted that the soldiers involved in the protest may face appropriate sanctions for failing to follow proper channels to address their grievances.
However, the Army reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring decent treatment for detainees, even those awaiting confirmation of their sentencing
