The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared a vote of no confidence in the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Julius Abure and demanded his immediate resignation.
The NLC is also asking for the constitution of a caretaker transition committee to organize an all-inclusive National Convention of the party.
This move comes amid accusations of maladministration, sole administratorship, and mismanagement leveled against Abure, which the NLC says has gone on for too long.
The Congress has also declared Abure’s recent announcement of a Labour Party national convention as illegal, vowing not to allow any form of illegality in the party’s affairs.
In a statement, the NLC bemoaned the news of the planned convention, questioning how it was organized without stakeholders’ knowledge.
The statement partly reads; “This news came as a shock to us as the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) were never in anyway informed of any plans to hold the Labour Party National Convention. We find this development a further aberration and extrapolation of the mismanagement of the Labour Party through a very strange leadership style of sole administration by the National Chairman of the party.
The NLC cited allegations of fund diversion and fraud against Abure, as well as his reported suspension of the National Treasurer, Ms. Oluchi Opara, after she accused him of diverting N3.5 billion in funds.
The Congress called on Nigerians who have faith in the Labour Party not to despair, promising evolution of the party’s leadership and reiterating its commitment to the party’s purpose of winning political power for the masses.
