Tensions were a bit eased on Thursday night as Authorities in Senegal released top opposition figures, Ousmane Sonko and Bassirou Diomaye Faye ahead of the country’s presidential contest scheduled for March 24.
Sonko who was barred from contesting in the elections has backed Faye – a relatively unknown political figure who was instead named as the opposition’s election candidate.
Faye is being allowed to run for president as a court has yet to rule on the charges filed against him.
There was widespread jubilation by supporters of Sonko whose imprisonment sparked deadly clashes in Senegal, with supporters, taking to the streets across the country and facing off with security officers.
