Argentinian President Javier Milei has suffered a major setback in getting approvals for his ambitious economic overhaul plans following its rejection by the Senate.
The vote ended 42-25, with four abstentions, challenging the libertarian leader’s “mega decree” — which originally contained over 600 articles that included abolishing limits on rent and the cost of essential goods, easing labour regulations, and ushering in privatization.
The bill still has a chance in the lower house although the President also has a minority there.
For the decree to become law, a single chamber has to approve it but it would be discarded if both chambers reject it which would be a huge blow to Milei’s plans.
