President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has apologized to state governors over his comment on the N30 billion hardship allowance allegedly given to them.

Last week, while discussing the previous administration’s Central Bank overdrafts, Akpabio referenced unverified reports that governors had each received 30 billion naira from federal accounts.

This was supposedly to help with rising inflation and food prices.

But some governors, including Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, disputed receiving such payments after Akpabio’s remarks.

In a statement on Monday, Akpabio’s media adviser Eseme Eyiboh said the Senate President apologizes and holds the governors in high esteem.

The statement explained Akpabio was commenting on unspecified cumulative funds given to state governments by the federal government for food security interventions. He, urged the sub-national governments not to be distracted by any misunderstanding of the context and true meaning of the statement
