The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has resolved to lift some sanctions on Niger Republic, Mali and Guinea.
While the regional bloc said the political and targeted sanctions on Niger Republic remain, it lifted some financial and economic sanctions on Guinea and some targeted sanctions on Mali.
Earlier, Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu asked for a reassessment of strategies for ensuring constitutional order in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Niger.
Speaking at an extraordinary ECOWAS summit on regional peace and security in Abuja, Tinubu stated the situation demands difficult but courageous decisions centered on addressing the plight of citizens.
He also urged the three member states that announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS to reconsider their decision and not see the union as an enemy.
The President subsequently asked that ECOWAS facilitate the unfettered flow of foodstuffs, medicines and other humanitarian items to the people of these nations, especially to the most vulnerable, adding that for Nigeria, this will also mean the prompt resumption of export of electric power to Niger.
