Nigerians and admirers worldwide are grieving the recent tragic death of Herbert Wigwe, Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings.
Wigwe, his wife and son died in a California helicopter crash near the Nevada border, alongside Abimbola Ogunbanjo, chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc.
While passionate about arts collecting and philanthropy, Wigwe was not an avid football fan, unlike many affluent Nigerians.
Sharing his reasons for halting his allegiance to Arsenal, the former Access Bank CEO recalled a “devastating experience’ with football.
“I used to support Arsenal until a devastating experience. In a match versus Manchester United, we were up 2-0 and ended up losing. I brooded over the defeat for days and realized I couldn’t handle such disappointment again.
“I’m very sentimental about everything I do. If my team loses, I’d stay sulking over it while others would have moved on. However, I enjoy when Nigeria is playing.”
While abandoning Premier League football, Wigwe found joy in the Super Bowl. Attending annually to bond with London-based family was a beloved tradition, his last regrettably ending in tragedy.
