Olufemi Awoyemi, the Founder and Chairman of Proshare Limited – Nigeria’s foremost Financial Information has expressed strong hope that Access Holdings will remain a big player in the financial market despite the death of its former Group Chief Executive Officer, Herbert Wigwe.
Awoyemi, an associate in an interview on Arise TV also hinted that Management of Access Holdings knew about the death of the top banker but concealed it so as not to disrupt the annual Lagos City Marathon sponsored by Access Bank.
While Wigwe died on Friday at 10pm in California – 7am on Saturday in Nigeria, several minutes before the marathon race commenced and hours before it ended. It wasn’t until several hours after the race ended that the news was finally divulged and confirmed by Access Corps.
Awoyemi explained, “Many people do not understand that members of Access Bank knew about this demise before the Marathon (Access Bank Lagos City Marathon) but the organisation took a corporate decision to protect that thing (sic) as against the news and they delivered the Lagos Marathon successfully without creating any panic”.
The Proshare founder said that alone was proof of how Wigwe and his business partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhoude who served as Group Managing Director of Access Bank had built the organization to outlive them.
“When they did that, it sent a strong message to the market that rather than be depressed, this organisation is in a strong position.”
