The Super Eagles of Nigeria stumbled out the gate in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations opener Sunday, scrapping a 1-1 draw against the National Thunder of Equatorial Guinea.
Although the Nigerian team controlled possession early enough at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, they failed to capitalise with Equatorial Guinea’s Ivan Edu turning the tide with a 35th minute shot to seize the shock lead.
Responding swiftly, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen came through with a towering header in the 45th minute off a cross from Ademola Lookman to equalize going into halftime.
The second half saw Nigeria barrage goalkeeper Jesus Owono but unable to notch the go-ahead goal.
Osimhen nearly played hero again in the 76th minute but fired wide to spurn what could have been the game-winning strike.
The draw leaves Nigeria hungry and Equatorial Guinea hopeful entering their second matches.
Nigeria faces a showdown with hosts and group leaders, Ivory Coast Thursday, while Equatorial Guinea meets Guinea-Bissau.
