President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea Bissau has approved the dissolution of parliament after saying that he had survived an attempted coup last week.
Recall there was a heavy gun battle on Friday between members of the National Guard trying to rescue the finance minister and Treasury Secretary and the presidential guard.
President Embalo who was at the COP28 climate conference in Dubai at the time, and returned home on Saturday said the parliament was dissolved because state institutions could no longer function normally because of complicity between the National Guard and certain political interests.
He said a date for the forthcoming legislative elections would be announced later.
