The Federal Government has decried the illegal tapping of some of the nation’s tap by some farmers while rolling out plans to commence the partial commercialisation of the River Basins across the country to boost food production and economy.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev said this during an inspection visit to Tiga Dam, stating that his ministry will carry out a documentation of farmers using the dam, and bring them into the partial commercialisation of the River Basin so that there would be full irrigation farming.
Utsev said the Dam is yet to be fullu utilized as it has the capacity for irrigation farming, flood control and energy generation, promising to partner with commercial farmers to work out a memorandum of understanding, to improve farming in the region.
On his part, Managing Director of the Hadejia Jammaare River Basin, Ma’Amun Dau Aliyu, said over three million farmers are benefiting from the Tiga Dam, noting that plans are on to register illegal operators to guarantee an all inclusive programme.
