Kids in Illinois, USA, will soon be able to sue their own parents if they fail to pay them profits from any social media posts featuring them.
A bill passed and signed by Governor JB Pritzker grants protections to minors on social media under the state’s Child Labor Law, after the issue of child exploitation for profit on social media was brought to the attention of lawmakers by high school junior Shreya Nallamothu.
Under the new rules, Children aged 16 and younger must be compensated if they appear in at least 30 percent of video or online content created by an adult in a 30-day period.
To qualify, the content must also be created in Illinois, and the child must be paid a cut of any content which generates more than 10 cents per view based on how frequently they appear.
