The Economic Community of West African States Parliament is currently at an impasse over the actions that should be taken to address the Niger coup.

Twenty-two parliamentarians took part in the virtual extraordinary meeting today to discuss the political crisis in Niger Republic with a faction in support of military action against the Niger junta, while others spoke in support of dialogue and diplomacy.

In the meantime, the entourage of Niger President, Mohamed Bazoum who has been detained since being ousted by members of his guard last month have confirmed that he has been seen by his doctor.

The member of the entourage who did not give his name said Bazoum’s doctor also brought food for the President, his wife and son who are being held with him.

The European Union, the African Union, UN rights chief Volker Turk and Top US diplomat Antony Blinken have all said that Bazoum’s reported detention conditions could amount to inhuman and degrading treatment, in violation of international human rights law.
