National and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Kano has upheld the victory of Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, Rufa’i Hanga.
Hanga’s election victory was challenged by his rival from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdulsalam Zaura on the premise that the victory of Hanga who contested under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) was marred by irregularities, malpractices, and non-compliance with the Electoral Act.
Zaura, through his counsel, Ishaka Dikko (SAN), prayed the tribunal to declare him the winner of the election and set aside the INEC declaration that announced Hanga as the winner of the poll.
Consequently, the three-man panel led by Justice I.P Chima said the case lacked substantial evidence and ordered Zaura to pay all the respondents comprising Hanga, INEC, NNPP and Ibrahim Shekarau the sum of N300,000 each as cost of the case.
