The Lagos state government has admitted that there were 103 casualties during the ENDSARS protest in 2020 but says none of them were from the Lekki Toll Gate incident which has been labelled a massacre in some quarters.
The confirmation was in reaction to some social media publications highlighting a letter from the Lagos State Government Public Procurement Agency about a purported mass burial plan for casualties of the 2020 #EndSARS incident
A statement signed by Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Olusegun Ogboye, said contrary to the claims that the deceased were from the Lekki Tollgate shootings, the bodies were picked up bodies in the aftermath of #EndSARS violence and community clashes at Fagba, Ketu, Ikorodu, Orile, Ajegunle, Abule-Egba, Ikeja, Ojota, Ekoro, Ogba, Isolo and Ajah areas of Lagos State.
Ogboye said the refusal to reclaim the bodies in almost three years and a need to decongest the morgues triggered the mass burial.
The government, therefore, appealed to social media rumour mongers to allow the families of the unclaimed loved ones a deserved closure.
