The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has vowed to resist the recent hike in school fees by the University of Lagos on the basis that the hike is outrageous and may force students to drop out.
The University of Lagos recently published an increase in fees from N19,000 for tuition to N190,250 for students studying Medicine and N140,250 for courses that require laboratories and studios.
Reacting, Spokesman of the Association, Temitope Giwa told VeonewsNG that the hike at this time was insensitive in view of the recent fuel subsidy removal and prevailing economic realities.
Giwa said, “We are not asking them not to increase school fees, we’re simply asking them to carry Student leaders along.
“In the case of Unilag, We’re going to fight it out because it is exorbitant, how can you implement a 500 percent hike in fees and not involve students. We first heard it as a proposal last week and then yesterday, it was published on the portal.
“NANS would demand a reversal and start fresh talks over the fees, preferably a phased increase,” Giwa told VeonewsNG.
