
The federal ministry of agriculture and rural development, has confirmed outbreak of anthrax in Nigeria.
In a statement, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ernest Umakhihe said the first case was detected in Niger State, close to the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on a farm and confirmed by the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI)-Vom, Plateau State.
According to Umakhihe , a rapid response team comprising of Federal and state One-Health professionals visited the farm and conducted detailed disease outbreak investigation.
He stated that the Ministry and in collaboration with the Niger state government has taken proactive measures to timely control and contain the disease, appealing to the public to seek caution.
Anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis, which occurs naturally in soil and commonly affects domestic and wild animals around the world.
