Netherland’s prime minister mark Rutte says he will not run for a fifth term in office and will leave politics following the elections in November.
Rutte, in a statement today said he will stay on as leader of a caretaker government until a new administration is formed after the next elections, a process which in the fractured dutch political landscape usually takes months.
His decision to step aside comes after a vote of no confidence was pass this morning at the law chambers, marking the end of his run as the longest-serving government leader in Dutch history, after taking over as prime minister in October 2010.
Rutte, the leader of the people’s party for freedom and democracy, on Friday handed in the resignation of his fourth cabinet after failing to reach an agreement on stricter immigration policies.
That was Netherlands’ prime minister Mark Rutte announcing his resignation from government.
