Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema says the country has reached a deal to restructure more than $6bn of debt owed to other governments.
He made the announcement at a global finance summit in Paris where calls have been made for an overhaul of the international finance system to help poorer countries and tackle climate change.
Calling the deal a significant milestone, he said work was needed to continue on a separate deal with private creditors.
Zambia which is heavily indebted to China was the first country to default on its debt during the Covid pandemic.
