12 persons have died with hundreds injured following a stampede at a football stadium in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador.
The incident occurred Saturday night during a football game between clubs – Alianza and the Santa Ana-based team Fas at Cuscatlán Stadium.
Fans, without tickets, were said to have forced their way into the stadium through one of the access gates to watch the quarterfinal match in the Clausura 2023 tournament, causing the deadly stampede.
The Salvadoran Soccer Federation, in a statement, said it deeply regretted what had happened.
Nayib Bukele, El Salvador president, also called for a “thorough investigation” to unravel circumstances that triggered the stampede.
“The National Civil Police and the Attorney General’s Office will carry out a thorough investigation of the events that occurred at the Cuscatlan,” he said.
“Everyone will be investigated: teams, managers, stadium, box office, league, federation, etc. Whoever the culprits are, they will not go unpunished.”
