Culture will eat strategy for breakfast and that is the reason why building collapse will continue in Nigeria.The culture of corruption and indiscipline will affect every sector of our economy.In recent times we have had too many building collapses but the chain of corruption always hampers investigations and in the end nothing will happen.
This cyclical web of destruction can only be nipped in the bud if all hands are on deck.The fact that the biggest real estate developers have government connections is why they always get away with their misdemeanors.
Recently a building collapsed in the high brow area of Lagos and on investigation I discovered that the owner that violated the building code is a free man and has since continued with his life while the poor workers that died in the building”died for nothing” like they say in Nigerian parlance.
Isn’t it shocking that a famous developer that caused the loss of lives was only told to pay a paltry compensation to the government and he has since rebranded his company and life goes on.
In Nigeria, it is shocking that there are no consequences for actions and that’s why the real estate sector is inundated with a lot of sharp practices at the expense of people’s lives.
Bad plumbing is always a recurring problem, as well as bad cement mixing, you wonder, who regulates buildings in Lagos and other cities of the country.I can guess, corruption does, as long as you can pay for it then no problems.
We must look inwards and build a fair and just system as that is the only recipe to start societal problems and building collapse.
