Reprieve is underway for farmers in the Niger Delta region as oil giant, Shell has promised to pay them 15 million euros to compensate for damage from pipeline leaks.
The company’s decision follows a 2021 Dutch appeal court ruling that ordered shell’s nigerian branch to pay for a series of leaks and that the parent company must install new pipeline equipment to prevent further devastating spills.
Explaining contents of the agreement, director of Dutch environmental group, Milieudefensie, Donald Pols, said the settlement would allow the plaintiffs and their communities to finally get on with their lives.
