The Comptroller-General of Customs Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd)says the establishment of the Joint Border Patrol team as well as increasing the arsenal of the service with regards to capability to be able to fight smuggling, and monitor the Nigerian borders are yielding desired results
The Comptroller-General was speaking during the weekly ministerial briefing by the communications team at the presidential villa , Abuja.
Col. Ali (Rtd) who describes smugglers as becoming more sophisticated says the agency is modifying its operations to respond to the threats.
He adds that while the agency has a mandate to generate revenue and facilitate trade, it is also ensuring the protection of the Nigerian borders through it’s modernisation process known as the E-customs project using technology
On revenue generation and it’s target for 3.019 trillion Naira, the customs boss says despite challenges such as the inability to collect the telecoms tax, the agency has so far generated 2.143trn in 2022 for the federal government.
He highlights some of the successes of the service since assuming office to include reforms of wages and welfare for officers , restructuring of operating processes and procedures and record revenue generation.
