Now that elections have come and gone. Though, barage of litigations are before the election petition tribunals, winners and losers have been declared by the electoral umpire.
Nigeria has a President-elect, a long term angler for the job – Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the ruling All Progressive Congress.
Now that he has emerged, next on the agenda is how to heal the nation, close ranks and forge a formidable future for our dear country. This seems to be the only way for the continued existence of the country, having seen the ethnic and religious cracks widened by the elections.
In my opinion, the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has 3 major tasks he must execute as soon as he gets into office.
These things would mark the defining point of his administration, if he is favoured by the Courts.
First, Tinubu must embark on aggressive search for ways to build harmonious relationship between the different nationalities in the name of national healing. He must have the courage to embrace all ethnic groups irrespective of the votes he got from the regions. He should resist the temptation of leaving out regions that gave him fewer votes in terms of appointments and distribution of resources.
If the President considers regions where he received as enemies prior to his election, he must bring them closer.
Secondly, the president-elect must, from now, begin to shop for round pegs in round holes in picking his appointees.
Tinubu is known to reward loyalty, but the challenges that assail us as a nation at the moment transcend loyalty. He must avoid falling into the trap of appointing those who worked for his victory but lack character and capacity to help him govern, particularly governors who could not make their Senatorial bids.
Finally, Tinubu, as President will need to be more assertive on policies that will better the lots of Nigerians. Beyond being assertive and firm, he has to be careful and cautious in rolling out these policies so that we don’t have another round of Naira Scarcity we are currently experiencing.
While the legal battles against Tinubu’s victory intensify in court, the best we can wish him is success for as long as he remains in office.
