Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have dispersed supporters of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan who gathered at the National Assembly Complex on Tuesday morning.
The protesters, demanding the resignation of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio over alleged sexual harassment claims, were met with tear gas as police sought to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
Supporters had assembled as early as 8 AM, coinciding with the Senate plenary and a scheduled hearing by the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. However, following police intervention, they relocated to the Unity Fountain to continue their demonstration.
The protest stems from an ongoing rift between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio, which began on February 20 over a Senate seating arrangement dispute. The Kogi lawmaker was subsequently referred to the Ethics Committee.
Last Friday, she accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, alleging he maligned her for rejecting his advances. The Senate probe into her conduct remains stalled following a court order.
