The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly criticised the decision by the governments of Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, and Kebbi States to shut down all schools for Ramadan, calling it a threat to education and national unity.
In a statement on Sunday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh warned that the move would disrupt learning and worsen the already alarming out-of-school children crisis in the North.
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that these states already have some of the highest rates of out-of-school children, with Bauchi at 54%, Kebbi at 45%, Katsina at 38%, and Kano at 35%.
CAN also condemned the lack of consultation before implementing the policy, arguing that even Islamic-majority nations do not halt education for Ramadan.
The association urged the governors to reconsider and warned that it may take legal action if the closures persist.
