
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has banned an Indian pharmaceutical company, Aveo Pharmaceuticals Pvt Limited for allegedly producing and importing dangerous opioid combinations into West Africa, including Nigeria.
In a statement signed by its Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC accused the company of manufacturing Tafrodol and Royal 225, which contain a harmful mix of an opioid substance called Tapentadol and a banned muscle relaxant, Carisoprodol.
The agency noted that an investigation conducted by the British Broadcasting Corporation, revealed that Aveo Pharmaceuticals’ products which pose severe health risks, including respiratory failure, seizures, overdose, and death have been found on the streets of Nigeria, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire
NAFDAC has now blocked any future registration of Aveo Pharmaceuticals’ products in Nigeria and reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing stringent pharmaceutical regulations to protect public health.
