No less than 41 persons are feared dead after a tragic boat accident in Gummi town, Zamfara State.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning when a boat carrying 53 farmers to their farms capsized on a river near the town.
According to eyewitness Abubakar Muhammad, only 12 passengers, including the boat captain, were rescued alive. “We did our best, but sadly, 41 passengers couldn’t be saved,” he said.
Sole Administrator of Gummi Local Government, Alhaji Na’Allah Musa, confirmed the accident, attributing it to overloading.
Despite the captain’s efforts to reduce the number of passengers, many refused to disembark.
The boat eventually capsized, and while four passengers swam to safety, rescue teams continue searching for missing passengers.
