Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has raised concerns over the possible escape of Boko Haram leaders imprisoned in Maiduguri following severe flooding in the state capital.
The flooding, which caused loss of lives and millions of naira in property damage, also affected the prison, leading to the relocation of inmates to a new maximum security facility.
Speaking to the BBC, Governor Zulum expressed worry that some high-profile Boko Haram members might have escaped during the evacuation.
He stated, “I’m worried, yes, I’m seriously worried. However, the Borno State Government has introduced the Borno Model of Rehabilitation, which has enabled many insurgents to repent. Over the past two years, more than 200,000 Boko Haram members and their families have surrendered, contributing to the restoration of peace and stability in the state.”
Despite progress in combating insurgency, Zulum acknowledged the immense challenges Borno continues to face, including the destruction of infrastructure, the loss of more than 300,000 lives, and now, the humanitarian crisis caused by the recent flood.
