The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) will start administering monkeypox vaccines in Nigeria on October 8, 2024.
The vaccine rollout is scheduled to begin between October 3 and 6, following the conclusion of regulatory procedures by NAFDAC.
According to Head of the Public Relations Unit at NPHCDA, Remi Adeleke, with only 9,980 doses available, the vaccines will be distributed across five states, each receiving 1,996 doses.
The selected states are still under evaluation in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), focusing on current monkeypox trends.
Adeleke highlighted priority groups for vaccination to include close contacts of monkeypox cases, health workers, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
