The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Monday commenced a seven-day warning strike in response to the abduction of their colleague, Dr Ganiyat Popoola, who has been held captive for nearly eight months.
NARD President, Dr Dele Abdullahi, confirmed the commencement of the strike in a communique following an Emergency National Executive Council meeting.
He said the strike will be total, with no concessions or emergency care provided during the period.
Dr. Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was kidnapped on December 27, 2023, alongside her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.
NARD members have in the past weeks staged protests across tertiary hospitals in Nigeria, demanding her immediate release.
