Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed their support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State in his ongoing conflict with his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
This renewed backing comes in response to a disputed party congress where Fubara was sidelined. The governors urged the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) to revisit the congress and restore Fubara to his rightful leadership position within the party.
These resolutions were part of the discussions at the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) meeting in Jalingo, Taraba State, on Friday.
A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting stated: “The Forum acknowledges the political impasse in Rivers State, where court judgments are being used to influence the outcomes of party congresses. We reaffirm our support for Governor Fubara and call on the NWC to address the discrepancies and ensure he assumes his rightful leadership role in the party.”
The governors also assessed preparations for the upcoming Edo State governorship election, criticising President Bola Tinubu for allegedly attempting to influence the outcome in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC). They condemned the intimidation of PDP supporters by the police and called on the Inspector General of Police to rein in such actions.
The communiqué expressed disappointment with the federal government’s reliance on blackmail rather than addressing macroeconomic and social policies comprehensively. The governors urged President Tinubu to show statesmanship by avoiding blame games and providing substantive solutions to problems.
Additionally, the PDP governors expressed concern over the federal government’s handling of revenue allocation and called for compliance with Section 162 of the Constitution. They recommended separating the roles of the Accountant General of the Federation and the Accountant General of the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure transparency and adherence to the law.
