The Nigerian delegation to the 42nd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff wants the regional bloc to effectively collaborate to deal with terrorist operations and illicit movement of small arms and light weapons in West Africa.
This was the submission of the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, and his Foreign Affairs counterpart, Yusuf Tuggar, in their address to the participants in Abuja.
According to Tuggar, “this meeting therefore presents an opportunity to share insights, exchange ideas, and strengthen our partnerships to enhance our capacities and also address the security challenges we face.
“Be rest assured that once your recommendations are presented to the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level, they will receive the highest priorities.”
The meeting, which has regional security at the center of conversation, was evaded by the defence chiefs of Cape Verde, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, and Togo.
Earlier, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, warned that the threat of military takeover of government must be destroyed, adding that it negates the core values and responsibilities of the military profession.
He added that in democratic countries, the military must uphold democratic values in line with the principles of their constitutions.
