Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Bashir Adeniyi has announced that the implementation of tax waivers on imported food items and drugs will begin next week.
The delay in implementation following President Tinubu’s directive was attributed to the late release of guidelines from the Federal Ministry of Finance.
Adeniyi emphasised the government’s aim to reduce food costs and inflation through this policy and stressed the need for careful implementation to balance the interests of local producers with the goal of addressing food inflation.
He said Customs was committed to implementing this fiscal policy but was awaiting detailed guidelines from the Finance Ministry which will consider the interests of all stakeholders, including local farmers and producers of items that will receive duty waivers.
Adeniyi pleaded with Nigerians to exercise a bit of patience for the policy to take off and assured that prices of food items would come down.
