U.S. government has also reacted to the death of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’ highest-ranking leader, hours after he attended a swearing in ceremony for the country’s new president.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in a session with newsmen, said the latest development may escalate issues in the region, promising that Washington would work to try to ease tensions employing diplomatic means to reduce bloodshed.
Austin however stated that the Biden led American government will not hesitate to help defend Israel if it were attacked by external forces, noting that such has been their stance from the inception.
In his reaction, Former Israeli general and security advisor, Yakob Admiror said Israel has every reason to go after Ismail Haniyeh, considering the level of havoc he championed, while noting Hamas has been depilated and does not have the same grip over Gaza as it was before the invasion.
