In the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele, the seventh prosecution witness has testified that Emefiele approved contracts and payments to companies owned by a CBN staff and significantly his family members.
Agboro Michael, an ICPC investigator, told the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja that Emefiele signed off on contracts for April 1616 Investment Limited and Architekon Nigeria Limited. These companies are reportedly owned by Sa’adatu Ramalan Yero (a CBN staff), Emefiele’s wife Margaret, and her brother Jonathan Omoile.
The defense counsel, Matthew Burkaa also presented exhibits showing Emefiele’s signatures on contract awards and payment approvals for both companies which included contracts for supplying cars to the CBN and renovating the CBN governor’s residence.
Justice Hamza Muazu admitted the exhibits and adjourned the case to June 25, 2024, for re-examination of the witness.
Emefiele faces 20 amended charges, including corrupt practices, conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, forgery, and obtaining by false pretense.
