The chairman of the mile 12 international market in Lagos state Shehu Usman Jubrin says the displacement of farmers due to insecurity is the major cause of the recent high cost of tomato, pepper, and other perishable items.
Usman speaking during an interview today, submitted that ninety-nine per cent of the people in idp camps are farmers, while others had to pay bandits before they can go to their farms to harvest the products, reducing the number of farmers and farm produce.
He also explained that irregular weather and pests’ infestation contributed to low yields, including supply shortage from the northern part of Nigeria to the south.
Usman also decried massive departure from farming culture, noting that generations of farmers have travelled out of the country, neglecting their means of livelihood, which also constitutes to low farming yields.
