Afrobeat Singer, Seun Kuti has retracted defamatory statements he had made against Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Bolaji Ayorinde on social media.
Recall that Nigeria won its bid to overturn $11 billion damages awarded against it in the controversial P&ID case.
In celebrating the victory, the youngest son of the Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, went on his Instagram handle @bigbirdkuti to celebrate the judgment and during a live video, it was alleged that he called Ayorinde a traitor for leaking documents to P&ID that sued Nigeria, sabotaging Nigeria’s interests in an arbitration matter, and overcharging legal fees
However, in the settlement terms obtained by VeonewsNG, Kuti acknowledged that these allegations were “UNTRUE and UNFOUNDED.”
As part of the settlement granted by Justice K. B. Olawoyin of the High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, Kuti issued a public apology to Chief Ayorinde, stating: “Having now conceded that my allegations are untrue and unfounded and that I have unjustifiably impeached the character and reputation of CHIEF BOLAJI AYORINDE, SAN, OFR, FCARB, I hereby publicly recant and retract my aforesaid UNTRUE imputations against CHIEF BOLAJI AYORINDE SAN, OFR, FCARB which stood to damage the hard-earned good name and good will of CHIEF BOLAJI AYORINDE, SAN, OFR, FCARB’s character.”
VeonewsNG further gathered that the settlement judgement delivered on April 18, 2024 also stipulated that Chief Ayorinde would not pursue further claims against Kuti unless there was a repeat of the defamatory statements.
Both parties also agreed to bear their respective costs in the suit.
